The Basics of Stamped Concrete

Stamped concrete is when you press in designs (patterns) and textures into fresh, new concrete after the concrete has been poured but before it completely hardens. The results are very accurate designs which can resemble higher cost products such as slate, flagstone, cobblestone, wood planks, etc. Therefore, you can create custom-looking surfaces for your home or business, which will increase its appearance as well as be able to withstand the extreme weather conditions on Miami Beach.

We have completed the installation of stamped concrete at over 500 South Florida homes. Every one of these projects began with a customer’s ideas, and ended with an engineered surface designed specifically for the extreme weather conditions that exist here, including heat, humidity, salt air, etc.

Stamped Concrete Designs for Every Style

Our stamped concrete design options range from classic to modern designs.

  • Classic Natural Stone Textures – Slate, Flagstone, Fieldstone: These designs provide a natural look that will blend well with landscaping.
  • European Brick and Cobblestone: Perfect for creating a driveway or walkway in a classic European style.
  • Modern Wood Plank Textures: Provide the rustic charm of real wood planks without the upkeep of wood.
  • Tile and Geometric Textures: Clean lines, precise edges create a modern look in tile and geometric designs.
  • Custom Creation: We can also develop a custom creation that is unique to your project.

We can assist in selecting the right design and color that complements your home’s architectural style and your personal style.

Our Stamped Concrete Installation Process

Here’s how we do everything with precision for each stamped concrete project we work on.

  1. Design Consultation: Choose your pattern(s), color(s), and how you’d like the layout of your stamped concrete.
  2. Site Preparation: The area where your stamped concrete will be installed has to have been excavated (dug out), leveled, and prepared to allow for good drainage.
  3. Concrete Installation: High-quality concrete is poured over the base.
  4. Color Installation: Color may be added either in an “integral” way (in the liquid form that makes up the concrete mix) or as a powder (color hardener).
  5. Stamping the Pattern: At just the right time, we stamp our patterns into the still-wet concrete.
  6. Hand Detail Work: We hand-tool all the edges and special details.
  7. Enhancing Texture: To create an even greater texture, we apply release agents to deepen the impression created by our stamps.
  8. Allow Curing Time: Let the concrete gain enough strength to support its weight.
  9. Clean: Remove all remaining release agent from the surface of the finished stamped concrete.
  10. Seal: Once clean, we apply a protective seal to preserve both the color and the long-term life of the stamped concrete.

To ensure perfect impressions from our stamps, we’ve had years of experience determining the optimal time to stamp — if we stamp too early, the impressions become blurred; too late, and they don’t make an impressive impression.

Stamped Concrete vs Pavers vs Exposed Aggregate

When compared on several levels (design flexibility, maintenance needs, cost, installation speed, longevity), the comparisons of stamped concrete, pavers, and exposed aggregate show:

  • Design Options: While stamped concrete has unlimited options for both colors and patterns, there is a limit to the variety of designs that are possible using Pavers; although exposed aggregate does add an option of texture to your walkway or driveway, it also limits you in terms of the variety of designs that are possible.
  • Maintenance Needs: Since stamped concrete forms a seamless surface and pavers create spaces that weeds can grow through, as well as allow for shifting in the event of settlement, maintenance for stamped concrete is easier than for pavers. Although exposed aggregate is very durable, it also limits the overall design possibilities.
  • Cost: In general, stamped concrete will be less expensive than high-end pavers when considering the aesthetic appeal and quality of each product.
  • Speed of Installation: As stamped concrete can be poured in one continuous pour, whereas pavers have to be installed individually, stamped concrete generally takes less time to install.
  • Durability: All three products can last for decades if properly cared for; however, stamped concrete will not shift or settle like pavers.
